Le Bon Appetit

Screen Shot 2016-04-28 at 4.27.04 PMHey, everybody! Spring is finally here, and Sweet Grass and Next Door are excited to get this season underway! We started off this spring with Chef Trimm and our Sweet Grass being invited to participate in Chef Kelly English’s fundraising event for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Le Bon Appetit. This event features chefs from around Memphis, as well as, chefs from around the country donating their time and talents to a very worthy cause. This year, we were lucky to be paired with Chef Bryan Caswell from Reef in Houston. It’s always nice to share you kitchen with someone who does something so different from you. It gives our team a chance to try some new things and further develop our skills. Our featured dish was a Low Country Crab Tostada with an avocado mousse, chili rubbed lump crab, a field pea salsa, and topped off with a piquillo pepper crema. We had a great time eating all the delicious food and helping out our friend Chef English to raise money for Le Bonheur Children’s hospital.

Hop Grand Slam Imperial IPA

The following Friday we teamed up with Bell’s Brewery by tapping their Hop Grand Slam Imperial IPA (the only one released in Memphis!) along with Oberon Wheat and Two-Hearted Ale Double IPA. Our kitchen prepared all the fixins’ for a Cuban Taco Party, and we kicked back with the Grizzlies, some good grub, and some tasty brews! We know we had a good time, and we hope you did too. If you missed it…that’s on you. Wait till next year.

Curb Market on Cooper Street

12105863_483729278475692_3523394216545452780_nFor those of you who have enjoyed our charcuterie over the years, a few of those select items will be available at the Curb Market on Cooper Street. They are located in what was previously Easy Way, and we are happy to welcome them to the neighborhood. We are really proud of what Curb is bringing to the neighborhood and encourage everyone to check it out. We would also like to send some love to Nick Scott and Tony Westmoreland who just purchased Alchemy across the street from us. It’s always exciting to add some new neighbors to our cozy little corner at Cooper Young. We wish them the best of luck and hope you all will check them out again.

CSA

CSA_socialmedia (1)After taking the winter off, we are getting geared up for the return of our Chef Supported Agriculture program on May 4th. For those of you who are unfamiliar, the C.S.A. is an 8 week program that you can sign up for that gives you a grocery bag each week featuring produce from farmers around the Mid-South, not to mention a few goodies from the Sweet Grass Kitchen. It’s a cool way for our patrons to get a grasp on where the produce that we love to use comes from, as well as unique ways to use you grocery bags to prepare a really cool dinner. So, sign up on the website today!

Happy Fall, Y’all!

Hey, Y’all!

I hope everyone is doing well. The month of October has certainly been an eventful time for folks here at Sweet Grass and Next Door.  Between the football season, a handful of events around our fair city, and the Grizzlies firing back up, our crew has been plenty busy.

2015 Vin-A-Que

The month started off with us participating in the annual Vin-A-Que Memphis Wine and Food Series at the Brooks Museum.  This year we roasted a whole hog, and it was a lot of fun seeing so many friendly faces on a night that always proves to be a great time. Click here for more photos of the event.

Next up was the Brewer’s Dinner, another event we always look forward to.  This is a cook-out we do every year on the night before the Cooper-Young Beerfest.  Our good friend, Andy Ashby from the Memphis Made Brewing Company, invites a gang of local area brewers into town to join us for a Memphis-style pork taco party and more than a fair share of beer to taste.

Deuce_McAllister

Deuce McAllister stopped by for some drinks!

The next day started early for us.  We invited a number of Ole Miss and Memphis fans to join us for a little breakfast before the big football game.  Just a couple of hours later, we joined in with the festivities at the Cooper-Young Beerfest where we served bratwurst and German- style potato salad. I dare say that we were a big hit with the beer tasters in attendance!  Then, the football game let out and the party really started!  The Tigers game came away with the win in a truly exciting game.  While Chef Ryan, a long-time Ole Miss fan, was a little bummed out, his spirits were lifted when former Ole Miss Rebels and New Orleans Saints running back, Deuce McAllister came in for some food and drinks.

We ended the month with Art on Fire where we offered another helping of our delicious bratwurst. Again, this was another event where we got to share some fun with our friends from other restaurants around Memphis. So, as you can see, Sweet Grass and Next Door were not lacking in the fun department, and there are many more good times in store for November and December, as well.

For those of you who participate in our Chef-Supported Agriculture program, you can attest to the people of Memphis that we are doing some really cool stuff with the local farmers that provide produce to a number of restaurants around the area.  There is still time to sign up for these last few weeks of the year. We provide you with a weekly grocery bag of goodies from local area farmers, as well as a few items from our kitchen, along with recipe ideas for that week’s selection. On that note, we would also like to invite you to our Garden Harvest Dinner on December 10th where we will feature our farmers on each course of the dinner. Tickets are available here and at Sweet Grass. CSA_logo

I know that everyone here is super pumped that the Grizzlies are back to grinding!  Get a group of your friends together and watch all the games with us.  We would be more than happy to set up a watch party in our private room at the back of Next Door.  Also, the holidays are coming up and we are available for holiday party needs.

Reserve our private room for a watch party. Call today!

We also have specials going on throughout the week starting with All You Can Eat Wings at Next Door on Mondays.  Come in on Wednesdays and check out our Reserve Wine List where all bottles are half-priced.  Friday, join our bartender extraordinaire, Harold Cook, at the bar at Sweet Grass for some half-priced sparkling wine paired with fried chicken. What we like to call Birds and Bubbles.  Harold is good for a few stories, too.

I wanted to end this letter by talking about a recent loss we experienced in our Cooper-Young extended familyIvan Ravlija, a bartender at the Young Avenue Deli, was taken from us unexpectedly.  He was a true friend to everyone in our little corner of Memphis and was capable of bringing a smile to anyone’s face.  I am particularly proud of the outpouring of love and support that was given by the Cooper-Young community, and it makes me proud that I work in this part of Memphis.  We will always remember our friend here at Sweet Grass and Next Door.

Thanks again to all our friends, old and new, who continue to support us, and we can’t wait to see you next time.

Thanks,

The Sweet Grass/Next Door Family

Spring CSA Signup letter from Chef Trimm

CSA_logoWe are excited to announce the sign up for our Spring CSA! For those of you that joined us in the Fall, we hope you enjoyed it and are looking forward to this Spring’s vegetables. For those of you that are first time Sweet Grass CSA members, welcome!
The late Fall and Winter was a perfect time to launch our CSA on a small scale, which allowed us to connect with more artisans and assess the quality and quantities of the produce and goods that fill the bags. This Spring, with more farmers on board, and all of our original farmers back in the mix, we will be offering a much wider range of fruits and vegetables, as well as more charcuterie, sauces, pickles and accoutrement created in the Sweet Grass kitchen. We got a lot of feedback about how that was the most unique part of what we offered, and we want to make sure everyone gets the most out of the membership.

We estimate the goods in your weekly bag to be over $100 worth of food from your nearby premium grocery store. Feedback from the Fall and Winter sessions actually showed that customers felt they had too much in the bag! While this is not necessarily a bad problem to have, we want to make sure that your bag is useful and not wasteful. We are going to offer two bags, a small bag ($45/week) and a larger bag that would feed a family of 4 ($55/week). This will allow you to decide what better fits your household needs.
With those changes and improvements, we have also decided to change the name from Community Supported Agriculture to Chef Supported Agriculture, which better defines our mission and goals.

This Spring’s CSA will run for 9 weeks, from April 15th – June 10th. As always, pick ups will be on Wednesday afternoons from 3-9pm at Sweet Grass or Next Door. Like before, you will receive 10% off of your food and drink on Wednesday’s when you pick up your bag. In addition, we have teamed up with the Wine Market on Spottswood in East Memphis to do a series of wine dinners over the course of the year and are offering a 10% discount off purchase of two tickets to any of them. They are each three courses with at least 5 wines and are loads of fun.

This Fall we will also host a harvest dinner using the product from all of our farmers. To show our gratitude to year-long members, meaning all four seasons, two tickets to this event will be on us.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. We look forward to another great season of
food, farming and fun with each of you.
